As a Harry Potter fan who was not part of the group admitted to the beta run of Pottermore last July, I have not been following the development of the site much at all.
To be honest, when Rowling announced she was going to be extending the Potterverse I was disappointed when the “big reveal” was that this expansion was merely an interactive website. I figured the rapidly diminishing hype over the site over the latter half of last year was due to other people coming to the same sense of disappointment as I had, but now I see that the real reason for the dwindling interest is that the site still hasn’t been opened up to the general public. Die hard Potter fans will certainly be excited no matter when the site opens, but I agree with Shoshana Kessler from the Guardian that the longer it takes for the site to open, the higher fans’ expectations will become and the harder they will be to satisfy.
Which means that when Pottermore finally does open up to the general public, I suspect I will no longer be in the minority as a disappointed Potter fan.
What do you think? Were you part of the beta testing group on Pottermore? Did it live up to your expectations or at least give you hope that when it opened to its full extent it would satisfy eager Potter fans?
