For clarification purposes: this is not necessarily a ‘new clip of the week.’ In fact, the above is fairly old. The clip of the week is just one of the video clips that I’ve been watching, new or old, that I find intriguing, useful or especially entertaining.
I’m entirely in agreement with Fry here. Language has always been a work in progress and it will always be one. The issue is not of correct language but of successful language. The goal of language is to communicate; if a sentence/a word choice fails to communicate, then it is a problem. If something is grammatically incorrect but linguistically successful then I don’t care. When I go to a grocery store and only have five items to buy (a rare occurrence!) I know exactly what the “10 items or less” aisle stands for. Of course, sometimes the people ahead of me have 12 items and that annoys me, but that’s not the sign’s fault.
This is not to say that I welcome poorly constructed sentences. Rather, I enjoy an approach to language that does not assume that there is one correct, standard way of writing and instead, invites playfulness.
Also, I love typography videos on youtube. If you enjoyed this visualization of Fry’s words, check out other typographies like it.
What do you think about Fry’s ideas? Are you a grammar nut? A stickler?
